My Wedding: 8 Days To Go

Wow it’s been another long break in-between posts.  Sorry folks!  I have a good excuse though, because the wedding is only 8 days away. :O I’ve been going nuts trying to get some of my things done in time.  One of them was another DVD cover I need to finish in the next 8 (really 7 since that friday before the 22nd is going to be incredibly busy) days but I’ve only started it today.  That’s a pretty tight deadline for something like this given the changes, adjustments, critiques, etc. I need from the client.  Luckily they’re all very quick to respond, and I need that.  I’ve begun some preliminary work on a website for a film I’ll be doing in February as soon as I get back as well as some marketing for another film.  I look forward to doing the marketing on this because it’ll allow me to try and replicate some of the Standing Firm results I’ve gotten in the last 4 months.

I keep thinking about writing some articles on marketing and things to keep in mind when doing a film.  I’ve seen some horrendous titles coming from people lately, and some really simple missteps that are going to cause problems for people.  They’re issues that you can’t really fix later, and on films in this market, you can’t afford to mess things up.  Making your money back is tough, and you need to nail down the easy stuff first.  Picking a good title that’s marketable, is easy to remember, less likely to be misquoted constantly, etc.  It’s tough to do, but if you get it right it makes things so much easier.  Branding your movies name across the different social media platforms is another important step as well as your domain name being the best it can be.  All this stuff needs thought so next time I do a film I’ll have fun laying out a plan for all these things and doing it the best way I can.

We’ve recently passed 77,000 fans for Standing Firm on Facebook.  It’s amazing to think we were at only about 16,000 around the time the movie was released.  Granted those 77,000 don’t equal the amount of DVDs we’ve sold, even that 16,000 when we had it doesn’t even equal our current sales, but that’s ok.  Facebook pages for a film as far as I’m concerned is a glorified cattle car.  Perhaps that isn’t the most eloquent way to say it but that’s really the idea.  Grabbing and growing a list of people who’re in your target market who you can nab as a fan in hopes they buy the film, or if they don’t when they “Like” the film (which a lot do and simply forget or figure they’ll do it later) I now have the ability to remind them via a wall post or something else.  It’s been a really great way to consistently boost sales whenever I post a link to where they can buy.  I’ve seen direct results every single time.  The hope is slowly but surely more and more people who are fans will be reminded and eventually get the film.  The amount of fans we have will NEVER equal sales at a 1:1 ratio, but even at a 1:10 ratio, we wont’ be doing half bad.  It’s a slow burn…I accepted that a long time ago.  From what I can see in this market based on the lifelong sales of a lot of films, this is quite normal.  You’d be surprised what is still selling and how many every year even if they’re 10 years old or 5 years or whatever.  There will always be someone new who has never heard of Standing Firm, and might give it a look.  Yes this means my work on this film will never be done or the next film, but hey…that’s the game.  I don’t get to punt it off to some big distributor and just hope it continues to sell.  I need to be the salesman, the pitchman, or whatever you want to call it.  If I ever stop, the film will level out like any other and hit a mediocre average sales amount per month.  Granted, that will happen regardless but how fast and to what degree is basically up to me.  Unless I can’t put in the time anymore or I run out of personal funds to keep funneling into this in hopes of a return, I’ll continue to do it.  Time will tell just how well the film does.

So yea the wedding is super close and Denise has been moving in more and more each time she comes over.  We have her desk in the bedroom now with her stuff on it (that’ll be her working space), one of her bookshelves, and a few other things.  We cleaned out my closet today and got it organized, and over the last number of weeks it’s really started to feel like two people live here even if she isn’t yet, LOL.  I think it’ll be a pretty easy transition.  They’ll be some definite difficulties at first, and that’ll be normal, but besides waking up in the same place…things won’t be too different.  Both of us have gone grocery shopping together a lot buying what “we want” to have at my place.  Stuff like that isn’t even weird anymore.  I can’t wait to be married, then she doesn’t have to go home anymore at the end of the day.  8 days then it’s off to FL for Disney.  We’re hoping to stop at Sherwood Baptist on the way back to NY (we’re driving to FL).  I had the pleasure of spending some time with Stephen Kendrick in San Antonio this past October but the environment where we ate lunch was loud, had constant interruptions, and the topic we spoke about was heavy.  It would be nice to catch up in a less stressful place, but it’s incredibly difficult to get ahold of any of those guys (rightfully so).  I’ve emailed but those never get through almost, and leaving a message I was very careful to NOT sound like someone who doesn’t know him.  With the way their movies have taken off they’re absolutely flooded with calls and emails every day.  If you think about it pray that word gets to Stephen and that by some miracle we’re able to meet up again.  It would make the beginning of this year even more special! :)

Lots to pray for and accomplish in the next 8 days.  Prayers from all of you are appreciated!

Been Away…

Sorry for the lack of updates.  Compiling the last week and a half into a blog post would no doubt cause an early death for you.  It’s been fun, and then not so fun.  I’ve learned so much about myself this year, when I do things I shouldn’t and when I don’t do anything at all.  What I don’t do sometimes says just as much as what I do.  Ever have one of those moments, where being still says so much more than being loud?  I won’t state any details, but it’s been a little rough.  God showed up repeatedly however amongst it all.

There’s only 16 days until my wedding day.  SIXTEEN.  Phew, that’s crazy.  This month truly is flying by.  I’m a little crunched for time lately so many people have had their toes stepped on.  I’ve missed a ton of phone calls (if you look on my recent calls you see missed ones from NY, LA, MS, CA, VA, FL, and AZ LOL!), failed to make many, emails piling up that I’m a week behind on, balancing checkbook stuff so all my papers are in order for taxes of 2010 (that’s gonna be fun this year), finishing the wedding details, 2 DVD covers to complete (one of which is like 25% of the way done and one I haven’t even been able to start), continuing to market the film and doing whatever press interviews or whatever that come in (they seem to be flying in constantly now…God is really spreading the word!), starting to get mine and Denise’s finances in order so we can lay down a game plan for the next few years, marriage counseling sessions, Vintage and e-groups starting up again in the next week, ChristianMovies.com problems to handle and newsletters to send, Ace Wonder duties to attend to, and keeping tabs on whatever books I have in progress including my Bible.  You can be sure that by the time my wedding arrives I’ll be ready to take a vacation from life for a little bit and enjoy some time in FL with my beautiful bride.  Pray for me as all of this is extremely taxing.  I’ve said it before that I’ve been “busy,” but yet again I’ve hit another record for how many things I’m juggling at once.  I have this sheet of paper I keep on my desk that lists all I have to do and get done (even little tasks).  By the time I’m done with it all it’ll be riddled with notes, arrows, red pen and scratches or checkmarks, and whatever else you can think of.  Is the wedding day here yet?

STANDING FIRM seems to be continuing it’s push into homes around the country and beyond.  I got a catalog in the mail from our South African distributor who placed it on page #2 of their new catalog.  The ad was a FULL PAGE.  I was stunned!  I also received the latest ChristianBook.com catalog in the mail and finally I saw that the film was listed in there.  It’s amazing to see it sitting on the page amongst so many films by filmmakers far better than I.  I’ve kept ever scrap of advertising this thing has received so I can frame some of the best ones.  It’s a milestone and a blessing I want to remember.  Our fan base soured the other day about 5000 fans in 24 hours placing us at almost 74,000 fans.  I wasn’t sure if it meant any sales until I kept my eye on all the christian retail sites online.  Our ranks increased and on Amazon.com the last 3 days we’ve been in the top 3000 DVDs on the site, and just a second ago I checked to see us at #21 under Religion in their DVD category.  I haven’t seen us in that spot since the film was released back in August.  I guess the marketing is working! :) It’s wonderful to see it paying off and to be getting requests for more interviews and articles.  This is exactly what we need to keep the word moving along to folks who haven’t heard of it or otherwise would never hear of it.  I got word from the wife of Rob (I’ll keep her name secret, not sure if they want me to share that) who is the lead in the film and she has shown it almost 17 times he said to her friends/family.  That’s more than I’ve heard from ANYWHERE else!  Seeds were planted he said so I said “water and be patient.”  Recently Rob sent a case of discs over to marines in the Middle East.  I’m sure they were surprised when they found this weird little DVD in their presents this past year.  We’ll see what comes of it or if we hear anything back.  How cool would that be?  All around I see God continuing to use the film, it’s amazing to watch.

16 days folks…counting them down.  *tick tock*

A Busy Week For Everyone

It’s no secret these are busy times.  I haven’t done any of my shopping yet except for one person (typical guy), invitations for the wedding came in later than expected so Denise and I are rushing to get those out, the rest of the world is going bonkers with it’s affairs, I have about 30 days to finish two DVD covers that I haven’t started yet, tax information to gather from 2010 (gonna be a fun  year), and various other side things I’m doing.

One random project I’m doing right now is building the Road to Perdition trailer in 1080p from scratch.  It’s no secret it’s one of my favorite movies, and probably one of the most beautiful ever shot.  The trailer on the Blu-ray has a pretty old transfer, so the colors are off, the image shakes, the image itself is cropped a bit, etc.  I recently ingested the entire film off of my Blu-ray onto my computer in Prorez422 as well as the trailer.  I just wanted to see the film in 1080p in file form to see what it really looks like.  It’s tough on a TV to see something for what it really is.  On the computer I can blow it up and frame through it easily to see the grain and all sorts of things.  Call it stupid and pointless but for me it helps me learn.  I’m really interested in making my footage look like film not just with how it’s shot, lit, etc. but the organic feel film has.  Call me a purist, but it seriously is for my own artistic satisfaction.  That, and I’m also a geek when it comes to making digital look like film or taking something shot on a low-budget camera and making it impossible to tell.  Take this shot for instance (it’s black and white I know, but just for the sake of argument) I added the most realistic grain I could to this shot of my mom.  When viewed in SD (which is the resulting format most of my films will likely be seen in the future, not in a theater), you’d be hard pressed to tell which one of these is film and which one was shot on a Canon 5D.  Even sharpness compares at this resolution because of the down-convert from HD to SD.  If you saw it even in color and with the grain animated you’d see what I was trying to do. Even in 1080p I would argue they compare.  This is fun for me so if you’re bored sorry!

The rebuilding of the Road to Perdition trailer is coming along nicely.  It’s keeping me on my toes since I haven’t had much to edit.  I’m matching all the shots frame for frame, rebuilding the titles, etc. while keeping the original audio track for the trailer.

Not a lot of other stuff going on.  I’ve begun reading Screenplay by Syd Field, and I’m behind on my Piper book.  It’s hard to keep up with so many things going right now.  I need to get back on the ball.  It’s easy to get behind even for a day without reading your Bible, and you feel it the following day.  Lots going on upstairs and in life, this week is super busy as well.  Denise has her last day at Gieco on Thursday.  She’s coming to work for me.  We’re going to give that a shot with her doing some secretarial duties and a few other sales related things to see if it works out.  There’s some things I just can’t do anymore.  It was different when I had just Praise Pictures and Standing Firm stuff, but now I have that plus a job with Rich Christiano for ChristianMovies.com, Heumoore Productions with Ace Wonder and doing any web/marketing stuff, a few other marketing ventures possibly coming with some people, DVD Covers (as I had said before) and also whatever tax stuff, keeping my finances together and trying to plan for a little over 30 days from now when Denise will officially be living here and at the same time working here.  I want a one income house, and we’re going to get started off on the right foot.  We likely won’t be waiting forever to start having kids (not that it’s completely up to us anyways!) and she’ll be 27 in just a few weeks.  If we want a handful of kids (which we do) then we can’t wait forever to get started.  Me and Dense met one year ago this past monday, and on Jan 22nd we’re getting married.  CRAZY STUFF.  Looking forward to the future!!
