Tired

by on May.12, 2009, under Journal

I was toast today after last night.  I woke up early this morning to get to work and help train my pastor on the media job I have at church.  He wanted to know as much as he could about how to do certain things so when I leave he at least could help if things got crazy.  After that I packed my car and went to Dave Gifford’s to shoot the last of his stuff and wrap him.  It was fun, we had a lot of laughs.  I like it when things are light like that, and from here on out…the two days left of filming are going to be smooth sailing.  Now I feel great because the hard stuff is all done.  No more to shoot that I’m not sure of.  That is great news and makes me feel really awesome.  Afterwards I rushed home to get ready for Vintage.  Tonight was my second to last night there and it was bittersweet but man was the message great.  Wes Sr. spoke, someone I know from many years back.  Such a great man of God and as an older man, he has more joy and fire pouring out of him than anyone else I know.  He’s awesome…

Applebees afterwards was great, for as big of a headache I had after the whole day (me getting overly tired doesn’t make me drowsy, I just get headaches) I was surprisingly aware of my surroundings haha.  I was cracking jokes left and right and was pretty sociable I think compared to normal.  I got a message today from Torry Martin, a Christian comedian I know telling me he was gonna be meeting with Julian Smith.  Julian is a really talented guy and has a bright future ahead of him.  If I’m able I want to work with him sometime, or even just meet him and chat.  It’s tough when you get so much attention online so quick, because getting ahold of him is almost impossible now.  Email, Facebook, etc. all get over-flooded with people saying “zomg can I be in your video!!!” and stuff like that.  I sent him an encouraging letter along with a quick demo reel I threw together.  Hopefully I get a response.

I’m going to bed, I’m way to tired to type anymore.  I’ll type more in tomorrows entry, night!

Breaking The Habit

by Kyle on Apr.09, 2009, under Journal

Today was an interesting work day.  I essentially downloaded and uploaded files all day, moving things to a new server from our churches current server.  That isn’t very exciting, just a loading progress bar most of the day.  Luckily the internet at home was working well enough today that I had no issues, something that has plagued me since January.  I talked to some folks and worked on the Standing Firm edit some more.  I think I’m starting to lock certain small scenes.  From what I can tell the film is about 1/7th Locked or somewhere around there.

I’m so thankful that we were able to reshoot some scenes for the film.  They were for story reasons and other problems but in the end we knocked out a lot of back audio in our film, things that would’ve taken lots of work to sweeten.  We still have some ADR to do however, a lot of it on outdoors audio.  Our shotgun/mixer setup really beat us up during production, and very rarely did it give us clean sound.  Most of the audio that is problematic sounds canned and covered and is absolutely unusable.  We will need to do some work to get things into a better arena and be up to par with the rest of the film.  Tomorrow Eric Stevenson (playing Steven) will be over to shoot his behind the scenes interview and start his part of the ADR.  I’m hoping things go well since neither he or I have done Dialog Dubbing.  It is relatively simple but I know it’ll take some elbow grease to get used to.  We have a time clock slowly ticking on this film, because Eric will be leaving us soon.  He will be in Korea to teach for a full year.  That means he’ll likely miss the premiere and many other things but just to finish the film I need to get whatever is needed with him done ASAP.  This makes me nervous and that’s exactly why although shooting tomorrow (for the film itself) fell through, we still decided to at least check something off the list.  Even if we only get 1 line of ADR done and his BTS Interview, that’s one more thing completed and off the list for him.

I finally got to ride my bike today, first time in well over a year.  I didn’t do anything last summer, it was all the movie and work.  No hockey, no biking, no vacations, nothing…just working.  It was nice to go riding and my mom was with me so we chatted as we rode.  Later on I went to our churches youth group to see some people and sat in on their study.  It was more conversational so we all had a good time talking about God’s Word (Colossians 3).  Afterwards I loaded up my car and came home to make sure I have what I need for tomorrow.

Also someone I know will have his new music video posted tonight at midnight CST.  Marc Scibilia used to live around here and I’ve had the chance to talk with him a few times.  I know his brother Matt much better than him but he is a great guy with a fantastic voice and a heart for God.  He also helped Devan Golda record a song that we plan to use for our film.  Thanks Marc!  To check out the music video go to Julian Smith’s YouTube Channel!

From the Valley to the Peaks!

by Kyle on Mar.30, 2009, under Journal

Woo!  What a day.  I went to a movie last night (shouldn’t have gone…I was way too tired) and got to bed too late.  When I woke up this morning at 8am, my head was killing me.  I called Dave Gifford to tell him we had to cancel shooting (not because of the headache but because of scheduling issues proposed the night prior).  I went back to bed for another 45minutes and got up.  I felt TERRIBLE, I haven’t felt this way in a long time.  I used to get really bad dizzy spells and stuff some years ago.  I could never figure out what it was, but it was always an event I could remember specifically.  Not a normal feeling for me as I’m sick about 0.5% of the year (knock on wood).  I went throughout my day feeling like junk, staring at a computer screen at work didn’t help, and then finding out the possibility that tomorrows shoot also could’ve been cancelled didn’t lift my spirits.  I remember thinking at one point “God your in control…” and just continuing the day.

I went to check out a location we needed to shoot in on Thursday.  Luckily it checks out fine, but I’ll have to shoot alone.  I was able to snag a friend to help me (thanks Ben) on short notice so I’m not 100% alone.  I’m glad the location checked out.  It also frees up my Saturday more as that day was originally scheduled for then (juggling schedules on a day your head feels like it’s going to explode doesn’t help your head…trust me).  I also found out today that something else I need to shoot is on Saturday (a real event taking place I can’t control but need to capture footage of) so the freeing up of the day is perfect.

I went home, and on the way called into WDCX 99.5 to talk to Neil Boron on the air.  They were talking about Facebook.  I told them what a great tool it was for those who know how to use it, how groups and fan pages are great for marketing and spreading the word, etc.  I bashed Myspace for a moment and said a few other things.  Maybe that show will be on iTunes or something, maybe I can find it! :)  Either way after that I went upstairs and ate a bowl of cereal in front of the computer…and began editing.  I was looking at what we had shot on Saturday and started putting it together.  It came out fantastic!

Two of the scenes we shot totaled about 2.5 minutes of the film with more from that day still to edit.  Shooting that much of a film in a day is a pretty big accomplishment for us, especially considering it was the most complicated scene we have ever shot in terms of angles, continuity, etc.  I was thrilled to see how well it turned out.  I wont ruin the film so you’ll just have to wait and see!  Either way it should really add some spark to the film and give all of you a laugh.  We’ll see how the other stuff pans out that we shot.

Oddly enough, I wrote a post about Julian Smith a few days ago.  I remember saying that he would be on TV soon and to keep and eye out.  Well wouldn’t you know it?  He got a call earlier today to come on the Tyra Banks show tomorrow at 12 noon EST! :)  Imagine that?!  Congratulations Julian!  The first of many my friend!  That guy is awesome, all the best to him.

So yea all in all the day started horrible and ended up great.  I’m feeling much better and I’ll know whether or not I kicked whatever tried to start when I wake up in the morning.

Let me say this though, and here is your spiritual lesson for the day.  If I didn’t go out to the movie, and the schedule for today wasn’t ruined, I wouldn’t have been over tired and gotten sick, and therefore wouldn’t have gotten the email from one of my actors that ended up landing us a shooting day on thursday.  Not only that, but I probably wouldn’t have been home to edit and get this great scene completed!  What we were supposed to shoot on thursday was supposed to be on saturday but I had forgotten.  So if I wasn’t sick and ended up at work and then contacted to move that shooting day to thursday…I would’ve missed out on saturday!  Funny how God works, I was sick for a reason. :)

Time for bed soon.  We are shooting a scene at a diner tomorrow, one of our few locations in the film outside of the church, and homes/yards of the main characters.  Pray that it goes well!

Who Is Julian Smith?

by Kyle on Mar.27, 2009, under News

So…who is he? We’ll he is a guy that used to live near us oddly enough. He is also best friends with Marc Scibilia, a musician from Buffalo who helped record a song for a friend of mine, Devan Golda. She wrote a song called “Father, Father,” that we hope to include in our feature Standing Firm.

Why should you care who Julian Smith is? He’s hilarious that’s why! Do you need anything else? No seriously he is a very talented guy, on the technical side and the public speaking side. His YouTube channel has become quite popular lately. :) His videos feature some good clean fun and it’s rare you find someone funny who doesn’t resort to toilet humor, swearing, etc. It’s just pure comedy and Julians personality is enough to keep me in stitches!

You will definitely see this guy going far. I have no doubt he’ll be making his living off his film related antics and overall goofiness. Nothing wrong with that in my book! Look for him on a few shows in the future, I have no doubts he’ll end up on a talk-show or two in the near future. Sometimes you find someone and all you see is pure RAW talent that promises a big future, Julians got it.

If your having a bad day, let Julian brighten it up!

A Saturday at Home

by Kyle on Mar.21, 2009, under Journal

icon_facebookToday was a Saturday, and oh how I love Saturdays.  I slept in late, getting up at about 11:00am.  I love that feeling when your comfortable in bed and you know that if you wanted to you could dose off a million times over.  I don’t like sleep, I don’t think anyone really likes sleep.  What they love is the moment just before they fall asleep when they are comfortable and relaxed, that’s the part people mean when they say “I love sleep.”  I’m glad I switched out my double bed for this little cot looking thing.  Simple logic would think it’s a stupid idea, but I have lots more more floor space now and the bed is actually just as comfortable.  It’s an old junky mattress but I took a thick blanket and folded it a time or two and placed it on top.  Now it’s nice and comfy. :)

Today had me doing the typical Saturday things, sitting on my butt in front of the computer surfing Facebook and chatting with folks.  I didn’t really do any work today besides taking a look at my film edit.  I fixed a thing or two, made a phone call to some folks, helped my dad in the barn and a few other things.

The Barn - My father is working on fixing the front of our barn where it rotted and had a leak.  The barn is one of the first ones in Ransomville, NY and it’s picture is at our local bank along with the other few historic buildings in the town.  It’s over a century old, so the wood is…we’ll a century old.  While my father was fixing the wood above the large door (where he normally pulls his 74 Chevy into to sit), the tension spring rigged door design caused a little problem.  Because the wood was rotted, at one point the bracket that holds the springs tension broke off and spun around like 6 times hitting my dad in the forearm a bunch of times before he pulled his hand away.  It happened so fast he didn’t know what hit him.  Granted this is old sharp rusty metal this bracket, and he could’ve easily lost all his fingers, his hand, or a giant chunk of his forearm.  Luckily he had many layers of clothing on (it was cold today) and it only tore the sleeve of his outside coat to shreds.  That could’ve been ugly.  So when I was helping him with a few things trying to fix it later in the day I was weary.  Such a simple design, it’s surprising just how dangerous something like a pulley system can be if its got a huge spring attached to it.  Yikes.

I watched the new Julian Smith video today.  That dude got to get a tour of the Facebook HQ and have a little fun with the workers (haha).  It must have been a blast.  This guy is a very talented young man.  Naturally comedic and creative with goofy videos and relatable topics.  He feels like a Jerry Seinfeld for the new generation, plus some quirkiness I can’t quite put my finger on.  He also had a few other meetings in California besides Facebook, one of them being YouTube and I’m sure a few others.  It doesn’t surprise me at all given his talent.  Someone will find him and it will snowball.  Oddly enough, I realized I knew a few people who know him, small world.  It was neat to find that out.  I firmly believe this guy is going to be BIG in the next few years.  Keep an eye on him for sure, some TV show appearances and many other opportunities are definitely on the horizon, I know it.

I got lots of things going on in the next two weeks.  We are shooting a few more things for Standing Firm, and I’ll be pretty busy doing that and working all week.  It’s going to be a nutty two weeks I think.

There is also some life changing decisions I have to make.  I don’t want to sit too long on a decision but I don’t want to rush either.  I’ve been offered a job opportunity in Los Angeles, CA and I’m inclined to take it.  We’ll see what happens, there is a lot to do before a move is possible but I’m prepared to take the initiative if it’s a go.  Time will tell, keep me in your prayers.

That’s it for now, I have to burn a DVD for a friend who is guest speaking at our church tomorrow.  His name is Derek so pray that all goes well and he does a great job!
