Shopping!
by on May.16, 2009, under Journal
I FINALLY went shopping for new clothes today. I don’t shop, in fact I haven’t really gotten a lot of new clothes besides maybe a pair of shoes and a shirt…for at least 3 years. I have old High School shirts lying around that I’ve dumped and in the past month I’ve been rotating my clothing. I simply don’t have enough and needed a new wardrobe pretty much. I had some help from some female friends of mine (thanks Devan and Mallorie!), and they did a good job
I got some awesome stuff and I’m really happy with the quantity. I needed jeans, shorts, shirts, some nicer buttoned shirts, flip flops, a belt or two, etc. I got a nice pile of threads now…pretty cool. They also forced me to get some color so I now own shirts in colors I never wore before like green, yellow, lighter blue, etc. They look great though. I was exhausted by the time we were done, and these stupid bags I had from the first store we went too had given me blisters and raw fingers lol. The handles were like cheap twisted paper and they were eating away my skin.
I also cleaned out my car today. I had a garbage bag worth of junk to throw out. I had bottles, reciepts, odd papers and stuff, and a bunch of other odd things. I vacuumed it out and got all the rocks and junk that had accumulated since winter. I can’t believe how many rocks were in my drivers seat. All over the floor, little pebbles from our driveway from each time I got into my car. There was probably a hundred of them or more piled in there haha.
After shopping I went to a going away party for a friend. I only stayed for maybe a half hour because I was so tired. It was sorta a hi and bye type of thing. Not going wasn’t an option so I popped in to say hello and scoot. I’m glad to be home and relaxing. Since the ADR with Eric didn’t go over into today, next week should be a little easier since one days stuff has been written off today! That makes me feel better, perhaps the week wont seem as nuts…it’ll still be nuts but yea you get my point.
9 Days folks….9 Days.
Move to CA To-Do List:
- Shoot Tomorrow then come home to do ADR with Eric till night (Eric wrapped)
- Do ADR with Eric all day Saturday if we don’t finish tomorrow
- Sunday is church, then a going away potluck for me with friends and family, then hanging with friends later in the day who I probably won’t see again unless I visit (sadness…)
- Last day of shooting with Rob at church
- Go to my last Vintage night at Tuesday and cry as I say goodbye to friends.
- Shoot Pastor’s interview for the film as well as my Gaffer’s and my moms.
- Finish ADR recording with Katy and Maggie, and anything left with Aaron.
- Work on all the ADR recorded to make sure I’m not missing anything and all takes are good and fit.
- Get any shots that might be left for the film like establishing shots while I have the chance.
- Begin packing.
- Shop for a new wardrobe all day one of the days.
- Somehow work in a 40hr work week at the church (my last)
- Complete training of volunteers for the taping at church and anything needed to be worked out with the guy taking my job in ministry.
- Finalize trip details
- Visit with any other friends and family while I have the chance.
- Finish planning my Bday/Going Away party and have it!
A Great Day, A Sad Day
by on May.16, 2009, under Journal
I woke up this morning feeling pretty tired but ready to get things done. I had lucky charms for breakfast (woo!) and packed up my car to head to Kevin’s. Today was our last day at Kevin’s home to shoot, and it was bittersweet at best. We had two small things to do but they were very important to the story. The last scene Eric and Rob did together was up in the bedroom and it went off without a hitch. They work so well together now. Eric is a talented guy, and he shows it more everyday. Today he did something he’d done in the past but because it was a harder scene it surprised me a little. He didn’t have Rob to look at for his lines. Rob was preparing for one of the hardest scenes he has downstairs while Eric did his side of their first scene upstairs alone with nobody to play off of. That really shows Eric’s talent as an actor, able to do scenes without someone to bounce off of, he just creates the moment himself. It’s great to watch. When we got downstairs we had some trouble as the speech Rob had to give was serious in tone and rich in meaning. We eventually got through it and wrapped the day. It was odd as we started packing up. I felt very strange, I couldn’t believe we were done at the house. So many days spent there busy, angry at times, upset, happy, overwhelmed by the power of God, etc. So much had happened in that home in the past year. On our way out we got some pictures of myself, Shaun Smith (Gaffer), Rob Reisman (Dave Corwin), and Eric Stevenson (Steven Corwin). I’m glad we got those photos, I’ll cherish them forever. Even when I went to lock the door, Shaun and Eric were talking in the parking lot and I walked into the house to stand in the kitchen one last time just to soak in the moment. I won’t shoot here again, it’s over. We have one more day left, and it ends at the church.
When I got home I immediately cooked a few hotdogs to eat because Eric followed me home to finish his ADR. We did really well and burned through things like mad. As soon as we got a process going things moved quickly, and we got everything we needed in 5 hours. That isn’t half bad considering the amount there was to do. Not much by Hollywood standards but in this case some scenes had difficult lines that were needed…not just “yea” or “yes” or “no.” One of the scenes is a COMPLETE dub which means the entire production track will be replaced. That means not just the lines need to be perfect, but the background noise, clothes rustling, footsteps (synced obviously), etc. all need to be placed and mixed properly to sound coherent and real. Eric did a fine job and when it was over we had a nice hug, haha. I’m excited but sad to see him go…it’s bittersweet at best. He is going to Korea for a year to teach English so regardless of him being done with the film, odds are he’ll miss any premiere or anything of the sort. I pray the Lord keeps him safe as he travels and works there. When he pulled out I walked to the window to catch a glimpse of him one last time. I’ll miss him.

Witness the madness!
Afterwards I quickly got ready for C.O.R.E. which is a college age+ group ran by some friends from church. We had some fun times while I was there. Some of the guys decided to goof around afterwards, I naturally stood by and just watched laughing at their goofiness. I can be goofy but the last thing I wanted to do was roll on the floor and get all sweaty before going to a movie. I went to see Star Trek again with my friend Sam. It was great the second time around. Very few movies get two tickets out of me, this one was worth it. Sam liked it so I’m glad, it’s probably the last movie we’ll see together before I split.
On the way home I decided to text Devan and see if she was up for the shopping tomorrow since I had ruled it out due to Eric’s ADR (we thought we wouldn’t finish and he would spend the night). But it looks like the shopping is on for tomorrow! Woo! Finally! I can get some snazzy new clothes before I move. I’ve been waiting to go shopping for REAL for a long time. Not just like a new shirt or jeans but a wardrobe of sorts. Clothing I like to wear and I enjoy wearing. I don’t own a lot of clothes like that, almost nothing now that I’ve gotten rid of so many that don’t fit or are just plain ugly.
Today was great, tomorrow looks to be even better. I gotta clean out my car though before I leave, it’s a DISASTER.
The next 9 Days are gonna be INSANE
by on May.14, 2009, under Journal
Ok so tomorrow starts one long stream of insanity starting with the second to the last day of shooting tomorrow. Here is what is on my list for the next 9 days starting tomorrow and ending on the 23rd of May:
There is probably something missing but yea you get the point. It’s going to be INSANE.
I worked on ADR with Rob today in the morning. It went pretty well and the takes seem to work good. It’s moving along a lot faster than I thought, thank goodness. After that I relaxed for a bit then headed to work with a headache. I talked to someone on Facebook for a while that really gave me a pounding headache. It was driving me nuts. Luckily it went away at work and I finished up some stuff. Some guy had his daughter on the playground at the church and he just kept letting her scream like a raving lunatic. I wanted to go give him an earful but restrained myself. It sounded like she was being murdered.
Afterwards I went home and continued to work on the post sound stuff and ADR from today to try and clean it up and get some of it actually in place and mixed. It looks like things will work well. The next week is going to have me doing a lot of sound work to make sure I don’t miss anything….should be busy.
After that I got invited to go to the gym to work out so I went. It was fun. I did some biking, some basic arm exercises, and spent most of my time on the leg press. I probably did about 50 presses working my way up from 110lbs up to the limit on the machine which was about 390. My legs are pretty big, one thing that I think is just genetic LOL. I hate what I look like in shorts…I look like a retard. I’ll sweat like crazy in CA in jeans all the time but honestly I just can’t stand the shape of my body. Maybe I’m just not a big fan of big legs, no matter how much muscle is/isn’t on them. Maybe shorts that actually fit would make that less embarrassing for me haha. I had old High School shorts on that needed to be tightened with a belt by like 4inches or so.
After that on my way out I got a call from a friend who got ripped off by someone I can’t stand. He ripped me and our film off in the past and is a big joke. I told my friend what he was, what he did, and NEVER to return his calls again. I can’t believe this guy. I’ll keep his name silent although he does deserve to be brought out into the light. I went home very upset because my buddy works hard and absolutely doesn’t deserve to be treated like that. I hope I don’t run into him in CA or I’ll give him an earful, I don’t care how old the man is. I saw right through him a few months ago when that whole nightmare happened during our trip to California…I’m just bummed my friend wasn’t so discerning. We paid him what we “owed” him out of principle and nothing more. In no way did we owe him a dime. Enough grilling of him, I’m done. I just hope someone really calls him out on how he treats people one day, I don’t have enough breath in my lungs to say what I would want to. All those who know him and work with him that know me (or know who I’m talking about)…if your reading this and you keep silent the way you do while that slim-ball rips off more people, shame on you.
I’m tired, got some prep to do before tomorrows shoot. G’night, keep me in prayer. I got a lot of crap to do in a short amount of time. *vroom vroom*
Busy Week Ahead

Torry Martin...reminds me of the furry guy from Spaceballs
The rest of this week is full of movie stuff. Tomorrow I have ADR to do half the day, then work at the church the rest of the day. Then on Friday I have Rob and Eric’s last day on set together then ADR with Eric the rest of the day. Then if we don’t finish on Friday, he will be over most of Saturday until we finish. Sunday I have a luncheon at church as a little farewell thing for me. The beginning of next week will have me trying to somehow finish my last day of shooting (amen!), finish ADR with Rob and others, work my normal 40hr week job, tape a few interviews for the film, go shopping for a new wardrobe, and plan a Bday party for that Saturday. Gah!!!!
Lots of stuff to do. I got a call from Torry Martin today who is a comedian from Nashville, TN. I’ll be meeting him on my way to CA it turns out…and hopefully someone else I’m excited to meet. I’ll tell you more as things get confirmed. I’m sorta glad I’m going more southern to get to CA. It should be a cooler drive, with more rocks and mountains than the route mapquest originally took me. Yes, it’s a little longer, but that’s ok with me if it means meeting some cool people!
I also bought a digital camera today to take with me to CA and get pix along the way! I’ve never owned my own Digital cam before, so I’m glad to finally have a decent one. It’s a budget cam but it’ll give me some nice results. It’s a Nikon Coolpix S560…should be cool.
That’s about it for this entry, I didn’t do much else today lol.

Silence that Soothes
by on May.11, 2009, under Journal
I went to work today a little late because of a long night last night. I also needed to go to the DMV and get my license renewed. The picture that the lady took was hideous. I look terrible…but it was so embarassing to have my picture on a computer screen facing all the people in line that I just hurried and picked one and got the heck out of there. I wasn’t at work for long, I had too much to do at home. I got the schedule worked out for the week and it looks like we should be very productive. I look forward to getting things done, more than you know.
My mom brought home a new air hockey table and ping pong table today. We got both boxes out of the truck and got them in the house. They were heavy…very heavy. After that she asked me to bring some sandbags down from the barn attic to put in the horseshoe pits. The second bag I brought down was in my arms and I missed the second to the last step on the stairs almost busting my knee or ankle. That could’ve ended really badly since I had a 75lb or so bag in my hand. Luckily I didn’t get hurt and was fine.
After that I sorta sat around for the rest of the day just picking at things on the computer. I made a new background for my twitter page which you can see here. I like how it came out. Beyond that I just prepped for tomorrows shoot and captured some footage from last week. Things look nice. Very few gaps are in the films edit right now. Nothing is locked in the edit but there are 3rd, 4th and all the way up to 9th cuts of some scenes already. The edit is coming along nicely and I’m glad to see the film in a much more completed form.
Something else that happened today was I got this numb feeling when thinking about moving. I just felt very odd, I can’t describe it. I haven’t let myself really think too much about it in the past month, because I had to make sure I kept my focus on the film and the work needed before I can even go. I think it is finally starting to creep in whether I want it to or not. The days are getting short. Tomorrow is my second to last Vintage night…I’m gonna miss those folks. I gotta make sure I say goodbye to people.
Tomorrow will be a shorter shooting day but an important one. I gotta make sure I get everything I need, and can’t afford mistakes. Later in the week we’ll do ADR and wrap Eric Stevenson on set. Rob will have his last things to do on the film early next week. Long haul for everyone, I’m glad to see the end, and in good time before I leave. 14 days to go…
Let the week begin…
A long day…but a good day
by on May.07, 2009, under Journal
Today we shot at the church. I was late getting there and fumbled around the house in the morning trying to grab all my stuff and render out whatever I needed to take with me for reference, and throw it on a laptop. Today was half new material and half old. The old needed to match many different things in the film so it was done last. We shot in and around Pastor’s office today and spent most of our time there. It really took a lot longer than I would’ve liked to get it done and in the end we needed to drop doing Pastor’s interview for sake of time but other than that it went well. We had fun of course, Pastor Billy is always a riot. Get him and Eric in the same room and you have some laughs ahead of you.
We finished everything in 9 hours…one of the longest days we have in quite a while. I was tired when it was over and because of some unforeseen problems, Eric couldn’t come back to the house to start his ADR. That is good and bad. Good because I was beat anyways and bad because our time is short and only getting shorter. Either way when I got home I decided I wanted to go see Star Trek and invited some friends who couldn’t go…but I got a text from another friend inviting me to go instead. So we went and you can read the review here. It was AWESOME.
A great way to end the day, I’m still feeling excited and happy after seeing it.
Sundays, Suits, & Madness
by on May.03, 2009, under Journal
Today was a Sunday so obviously I was getting up for church. I arose at 9am ready to start the day but alas, no clothes to wear. I’ve been rotating shirts for 2 weeks now, I run out of clothes QUICK. Luckily I found a nice new dress shirt in my closet I don’t think I’ve worn before and put it with the suit and outfit from the wedding yesterday…instant snazziness.
I taped the service as usual. This was my 2nd to last time filming Pastor Billy. Over 230 sermons later, my time is almost over. I’ve taped every service besides 2 or 3 since April 30th, 2006 (Pastor Billy’s first sermon at NFBC). Two more to tape (a guest next week), and his last one I’ll do on the 17th. It’ll be bittersweet I’m sure but I’m glad to be rid of it. Time to move on, and leave the Media Ministry to thrive on its own steam
When church was ending I ran a little ways up the aisle to get some shots of people in pews I need for the film. They give you funny looks (who wouldn’t) when they have a camera near them. I wasn’t really pointing at any of them, but using their bodies as pillars I guess you could say. I was shooting through them zoomed in on others across the sanctuary. I got a shot or two I think I can use…thank goodness. I only have a few to get it right!
I went out to eat with Jen & Brad after church. We went to the Brickyard (my favorite place to eat as of late) and we had a great time. They are such awesome friends, and I’m jealous of them haha. They love each other so much. It’s all over their faces, in every glance and smirk. I’m always staring at them and they always catch me doing so, haha. I can’t help it…it’s just too cool to watch them interact. I tease Brad every once in a while when his wedding day is. They are PB&J, and they know it!
After that I took my the long way home again, enjoying the drive and the weather along the river. I’ll miss that drive I think, although I may find another I enjoy even more! After I got home I worked on our edit a little bit and called Kevin to come and meet. I sorta edited with him sitting next to me and we actually got some good stuff done. I get motivated when Kevin is around so I’m glad he was there. I probably got more done with him just sitting there and me commentating than I have in a long time by myself. After he left I got even more done tightening up some edits and getting some scene transitions done. Later came the big one, when I got an email from Bill Ebel (editor of Fireproof) with a new edit of a scene I had been waiting for. It had been a long time since I had heard from him so I wasn’t sure what was going on. I was relieved to get the email. He explained he was overloaded which I figured so that was no problem. The scene was good and I did some tweaking and some color correction and other things to get it more refined. After that I tackled some audio problems. That scene worried me a lot but surprisingly I pulled a rabbit out of the hat and smoothed it out pretty well I think. I didn’t know I could do that LOL…and it was one of the scenes I was worried about the most. Woo! I’m glad to have that behind me. The scene isn’t done by any means, it needs lots more work, but the worry for it is pretty much gone.
Well that’s about it, 3 days of shooting this week coming up. The way things worked out it’ll be Tuesday here at my house with Aaron for a scene he has alone, Rob by himself again on Wednesday, and lots of people on Thursday in our last huge day. Beyond this week we’ll have 2 small things to do at Kevin’s house and the day at Dave Giffords that got rained out. Many more days (as always) then we thought or planned for but hey…you can’t control the weather OR people schedules. It’ll be fine. Also Tuesday will be a day we start tackling ADR. Aaron ironically will be the first to give it a real try. That is funny since he is normally the last one shot, the hardest to schedule, etc. I hope we get all of his stuff done that day in a few hours. He doesn’t have a lot, just a few lines. Here’s hoping! What a great week it’ll be if we knock all that out of the park!
Relaxing but Busy
by Kyle on Apr.10, 2009, under Journal
Today was a nice day. To read about the movie side of things with Standing Firm go here. Aside from the business stuff related to today it was nice to hang out with Eric during the “work” part of the day. We’ve known each other for a year now and been through quite a bit shooting the film. He’s a great guy and a hilarious one at that. It was nice to be in a less stressful more laid back environment to get something done. I think I’ll enjoy finishing this film on and off set since the days are getting less and less stressful as time goes on. Of course stress comes from other places, but I’m glad it’s not from the film as much as it used to.
My dad came home today which was nice. He’ll be home for the weekend then go back to GA for work. I’m not sure if I’ll see him again for a long time if I end up moving. Speaking of which I’ve been wondering more and more if that is what will happen. I’m not so sure I’ll be moving. An opportunity arose today with the place I was looking at but was quickly squashed within an hour. I need to find a place to live in 2 weeks max or I might have to decline my LA job offer. I hope I don’t have to do that but fate (or God rather) might step in and take that opportunity away.
Problem is no matter where I find a place I can’t afford my own. I’m not being paid enough to have my own place. I’m not going to room with some boozing sinful retard either. I need to find someone trustworthy that will at least keep the beer/cigs away LOL. Also no matter where I find a place I’ll have to pay a rent payment before I even get in my car to move. Nobody will give me a place I can’t move into right away or within a week or so. Real estate is crazy out there. I’ll have to pay a month of rent during my last month here because I have to put in a respectable amount of weeks before I leave my job in ministry. It’s a sticky situation.
I emailed the head honcho at PureFlix Entertainment to give him the situation and make sure he knows what the deal is. I don’t want to hear “well we didn’t know…blah blah.” The situation isn’t a good one, they need to know that. Hopefully God brings something soon.
It was 50 degrees today, something I enjoy even some find that to be chilly. I had my sunroof and side window down while I drove today. Even if it isn’t warm I’m starting to pretend it is just to feel better about the crappy weather we get. I’m looking forward to the sun, and opening windows and getting some fresh air in my house, my office, etc. Summer…bring it on.
I guess that’s about it for now. Lots of crap going on… Anyone out there who gives a care please pray that I find a place to live out there! I really need a yay or nay ASAP.
We’ll see how this goes…

Breaking The Habit
by Kyle on Apr.09, 2009, under Journal
Today was an interesting work day. I essentially downloaded and uploaded files all day, moving things to a new server from our churches current server. That isn’t very exciting, just a loading progress bar most of the day. Luckily the internet at home was working well enough today that I had no issues, something that has plagued me since January. I talked to some folks and worked on the Standing Firm edit some more. I think I’m starting to lock certain small scenes. From what I can tell the film is about 1/7th Locked or somewhere around there.
I’m so thankful that we were able to reshoot some scenes for the film. They were for story reasons and other problems but in the end we knocked out a lot of back audio in our film, things that would’ve taken lots of work to sweeten. We still have some ADR to do however, a lot of it on outdoors audio. Our shotgun/mixer setup really beat us up during production, and very rarely did it give us clean sound. Most of the audio that is problematic sounds canned and covered and is absolutely unusable. We will need to do some work to get things into a better arena and be up to par with the rest of the film. Tomorrow Eric Stevenson (playing Steven) will be over to shoot his behind the scenes interview and start his part of the ADR. I’m hoping things go well since neither he or I have done Dialog Dubbing. It is relatively simple but I know it’ll take some elbow grease to get used to. We have a time clock slowly ticking on this film, because Eric will be leaving us soon. He will be in Korea to teach for a full year. That means he’ll likely miss the premiere and many other things but just to finish the film I need to get whatever is needed with him done ASAP. This makes me nervous and that’s exactly why although shooting tomorrow (for the film itself) fell through, we still decided to at least check something off the list. Even if we only get 1 line of ADR done and his BTS Interview, that’s one more thing completed and off the list for him.
I finally got to ride my bike today, first time in well over a year. I didn’t do anything last summer, it was all the movie and work. No hockey, no biking, no vacations, nothing…just working. It was nice to go riding and my mom was with me so we chatted as we rode. Later on I went to our churches youth group to see some people and sat in on their study. It was more conversational so we all had a good time talking about God’s Word (Colossians 3). Afterwards I loaded up my car and came home to make sure I have what I need for tomorrow.
Also someone I know will have his new music video posted tonight at midnight CST. Marc Scibilia used to live around here and I’ve had the chance to talk with him a few times. I know his brother Matt much better than him but he is a great guy with a fantastic voice and a heart for God. He also helped Devan Golda record a song that we plan to use for our film. Thanks Marc! To check out the music video go to Julian Smith’s YouTube Channel!
