Saying Goodbye – Part 2
Posted by in Journal on May 19, 2009
Today was another day of ADR for Rob. I got up in the morning and meant to go to work to run something quick then run home but I was just too behind. We got to work as soon as Rob got here and it took us about 4 hours to complete things. We goofed around a little towards the end, putting in our voices for other actors. It was fun putting in my voice for Pastor in a scene and….editing the dialog. We sent it to him and waited for his phone call, he laughed immediately. It was great fun, our cheeks were killing us watching a few short scenes with the absolute wrong voices on peoples faces. Afterwards I waited for my mom to get home, ate some lunch, and played her in ping pong. She told me to “hurry up and eat your hot dogs, I have to wup you in ping pong.” I played her and won, woo!
I love playing ping pong…and I hope for a nice day on my b-day so we can play forever ha ha.
Later I went to Vintage and said goodbye to a lot of people I wont see for a very long time. It was bittersweet at best. I found myself saying goodbye to people more than once during the night, I couldn’t help it. Everyone had good things to say and encouraged me which meant a lot. Applebee’s was fun, and the buffalo wings were subpar…they always shortchange me. Either way it was a great day and I had lots of fun. Tomorrow is going to be pretty nuts and tiring. I have our last day of shooting tomorrow, and I’m a bit nervous about completing it…not because of the amount of stuff (the amount is very little), it’s because of my uncertainty of what exactly I need. I have a good idea but it’s just one of those “I don’t know” circumstances that scares me to death. We also have something else to do tomorrow I wont mention but I’ve been dreading it for a long time. Hopefully the day ends well. I gotta figure out a way to get some ministry work done too after the shoot and the other stuff. Should be a busy day, and a long one.
Move to CA To-Do List:
- Shoot Tomorrow then come home to do ADR with Eric till night (Eric wrapped)
- Do ADR with Eric all day Saturday if we don’t finish tomorrow
- Sunday is church, then a going away potluck for me with friends and family, then hanging with friends later in the day who I probably won’t see again unless I visit (sadness…)
- Last day of shooting with Rob at church
- Go to my last Vintage night at Tuesday and cry as I say goodbye to friends.
- Shoot Pastor’s interview for the film as well as my Gaffer’s and my moms.
- Finish ADR recording with Katy and Maggie, and anything left with Aaron.
- Work on all the ADR recorded to make sure I’m not missing anything and all takes are good and fit.
- Get any shots that might be left for the film like establishing shots while I have the chance.
- Begin packing.
- Shop for a new wardrobe all day one of the days.
- Somehow work in a 40hr work week at the church (my last)
- Complete training of volunteers for the taping at church and anything needed to be worked out with the guy taking my job in ministry.
- Finalize trip details
- Visit with any other friends and family while I have the chance.
- Finish planning my Bday/Going Away party and have it!

I was toast today after last night. I woke up early this morning to get to work and help train my pastor on the media job I have at church. He wanted to know as much as he could about how to do certain things so when I leave he at least could help if things got crazy. After that I packed my car and went to Dave Gifford’s to shoot the last of his stuff and wrap him. It was fun, we had a lot of laughs. I like it when things are light like that, and from here on out…the two days left of filming are going to be smooth sailing. Now I feel great because the hard stuff is all done. No more to shoot that I’m not sure of. That is great news and makes me feel really awesome. Afterwards I rushed home to get ready for Vintage. Tonight was my second to last night there and it was bittersweet but man was the message great. Wes Sr. spoke, someone I know from many years back. Such a great man of God and as an older man, he has more joy and fire pouring out of him than anyone else I know. He’s awesome…
Applebees afterwards was great, for as big of a headache I had after the whole day (me getting overly tired doesn’t make me drowsy, I just get headaches) I was surprisingly aware of my surroundings haha. I was cracking jokes left and right and was pretty sociable I think compared to normal. I got a message today from Torry Martin, a Christian comedian I know telling me he was gonna be meeting with Julian Smith. Julian is a really talented guy and has a bright future ahead of him. If I’m able I want to work with him sometime, or even just meet him and chat. It’s tough when you get so much attention online so quick, because getting ahold of him is almost impossible now. Email, Facebook, etc. all get over-flooded with people saying “zomg can I be in your video!!!” and stuff like that. I sent him an encouraging letter along with a quick demo reel I threw together. Hopefully I get a response.
I’m going to bed, I’m way to tired to type anymore. I’ll type more in tomorrows entry, night!

Today was unusual. I went to work at normal, and got some things done. I had to leave early today to go pick up the equipment which was left at Dave Gifford’s house in Youngstown (since we thought we would be shooting there last week we left it there). That gave me the opportunity to take that nice drive along the river I normally talk about enjoying on Sundays. It was weird because it felt like a Sunday simply because I was making that drive. I picked up the stuff and went home, passing a few school busses on the way. After I got home I rushed to get all the equipment out of my car to try and figure out where to shoot Aaron’s scene in the next hour. I tried a few places and settled on the dining room. I hadn’t really planned on being in there again since we have shot there before. Both scenes involve Aaron in the dining room and it’s supposed to be two different locations in the film. Odds are you wont tell since I’m much closer on his face in this one and at a different part of the room. It should come out fine. I also had no sound person so I clamped the boom pole into position via two stands. It held up well since he didn’t really have to move much. The scene was actually really important even though it was just a short conversation on the phone. We shot maybe 30 minutes or so of footage which is a lot considering the scene will probably be a minute.
After that we got the sound equipment upstairs to try out the ADR process. Aaron only has a few lines so it was a good test run. However, the scene he had to dub had him way far back in frame, making it really hard to see his lips. I had to zoom into the footage 200% to see his lines. This was a scene because of weather I needed to quickly film and get it over with. It’s something you would have a lav mic on the actor for since they are well out of boom range. We’ve known we needed to dub this for months (we shot it summer last year for Pete’s sake) and just now have the time to start the ADR. It went pretty well and we’ll see how it mixes together. I’m trying to get a feel for this and so was Aaron. It’s one of the rare scenes I need to totally recreate everything and throw out the production track. Dialog, footsteps, clothing, background noise, and in this case car doors, car starting, pulling away, etc. Even a few folks walking in the background will probably need a thing or two. LOTS of work to be done on scenes like that…luckily there is only three. That isn’t good but isn’t bad considering what we thought it was going to be just a few short months ago. We finished his lines in about an hour and we both left.
I went to Vintage (which I was late for) and hung with some friends afterwards at Applebees (as is the norm). It’s a fun time, and I’ll miss it. I have three Vintage outings left, and three Sunday mornings left. Hopefully my last Sunday I’ll be able to actually sit in a pew (something I’ve only done maybe 3 times since Spring 2006). It’ll be weird but I’ll love not having anything to worry about on a Sunday. Just come and be a church goer…what a concept!
After I got home I took a bike ride. Three times around the block, hustling all the way lol. I gotta get rid of this chin I got, it drives me nuts. I think this new haircut has actually made me even more conscious of my face. The haircut is kinda roundish so my face looks more round to me in the mirror. I gotta get the face off my face, yuck. Honestly, I normally lose it there before anywhere else so hopefully I can actually get some sort of jawline showing a little easier in the near future. Yea I’m body conscious…sue me.
G’night, I’m bushed and gotta get up at 7:30am to shoot at 9am. Here’s hoping for a good shoot!
